Day9: Writing Introductions

Objectives: We will be able to...

• Identify the key components of an introduction of argumentative essays
• Distinguish between good thesis statements and bad thesis statements
• Write a clear, direct thesis statement

Warm up (5 min)
"What have you done to get your reader interested in your writing in the past?" 

 "What kind of information have you written to introduce your writing?"

Analyzing Sample Introductions (10 min)
Identify what kind of information is in the introduction paragraphs, after about 6 minutes, 

join a person who has the other paragraph and compare notes.

Introductions PPT (15 min)
Discuss each part of the introduction paragraph.

Review two-part thesis statement.

Analyzing Sample Paragraphs (5 min)
Return to their sample paragraphs and double check their answers on the Sample paragraphs.

Writing and revising thesis statements (15min)
Brainstorm how to write a hook for the diagnostic essay.

Write a clear thesis statement in the diagnostic essay.

2. Revise the introduction paragraph of your diagnostic essay.
