    (eg. description, interpretation, and outcome)
  • Provide example phrases and vocabulary useful for each element of reflection
  • Plan, organize, and write a reflection paragraph, incorporating the useful language
  • Using the language of reflection, write a reflection paragraph about strategies of avoiding plagiarism

Warm-up Discussion (10 min)

Look at the picture of Norman Rockwell’s self portrait.
What is he doing now?
What can you see in the picture?
What was he probably thinking about when painting this picture?
Just like he painted himself painting, we will write about our writing.

Look at this quote, “We do not learn from experience, we learn from reflecting on our experiences.”
What do you think is the purpose of writing a reflection?
Why is it important to reflect on your learning or writing?
Lecture: Possible Structure for Reflective Writing (10 min)
A reflective essay is usually a part of a portfolio, analyzing the progress you made as a writer. In a reflection essay, three main elements should be included.
The description part should be a brief preview of your reflection (this should be the shortest in length.) You do not need a thesis statement like other academic essays unless you are arguing a point. The interpretation part should discuss your development and feelings (use descriptive language and be honest.) The outcome part should discuss what you gained and still struggle with after the whole unit and your future plans on applying this to your writing.

The Language of Reflection (10 min)
Reflective writing is about yourself, so it is fine to write it in a first person pronouns such as “I” or “me.” There are also some phrases that might be helpful in different parts of your essay. In the interpretation, you must describe your personal thoughts and feelings, so use a lot of adjectives and descriptive language. Using the signal phrases, write one sentence for each element of the essay. Also, brainstorm some of your personal feelings using emotion adjectives.

Wrap-up (10 min)
For homework, and the last assignment for Unit 2, you will write a reflective essay of three paragraphs based on the three elements that we learned today.

Writing Prompts for Avoiding Plagiarism
Task: You will think critically about your writing experience in completing the Paragraph Portfolio Project.  You will ask yourself the following questions:
  • Compare and contrast the previous knowledge and current knowledge about avoiding plagiarism.
  • What experiences were most meaningful or influential in your writing and why?
  • What was the most challenging part and why? Is there anything still unclear or difficult for you?
  • As a result of learning, how can you apply what you have learned to your future writing?
Formatting Requirements: This is at least one paragraph of around 300 words.  It should be typed in Font Times New Roman, size 12, and double-spaced. Name the file "Reflection_YOURNAME" and save it to the Unit2 subfolder in Google Drive.
Source Requirements: You are not required to use any source material, but you may reference any of your writing or your instructor’s feedback. Plagiarism Disclaimer: Plagiarism is unacceptable.  Any essay that contains plagiarism, even if unintentional, will lose many points and likely result in a conference with the instructor over the ramifications of the plagiarism.
