Day12: Compare/Contrast

Objectives: We will be able to...
  1. Understand what it means to compare two ideas, concepts, people, places, or things
  2. Use specific language to introduce comparisons
  3. Organize a comparison paragraph
Similarities and Differences (10 min)
With a partner, write down as many similarities as you can in 3 minutes.
Next, write as many differences as you can in 3 minutes.

The Language of Comparison (15 min)
What words do you know that signal comparisons? 
Let's REVIEW what you know and learn new signal words.
Use the signal words to create sentences based on the similarities and differences.

Organization Patterns (25 min)
Part 1 (10min)
In your groups, read the paragraph that has been assigned to you. 
Pay attention to how the author organizes the subjects and details. 
With a partner, write out an outline of the paragraph. 
Part 2 (10min)
Be sure that each of you makes a separate copy because you will need to show it to a 2nd partner.
With your second partner, discuss how your paragraph was organized and try to describe the different patterns.
Part 3 (5min) 
Afterwards, we will share our observations with the class.

Please read the given article, identifying its organization.
Also, try to identify what subjects and characteristics are discussed in the article.
